Caribou is Life

This Management Plan describes how the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board (BQCMB) will work with others to make sure there are Beverly and Qamanirjauq barren-ground caribou herds for today and for the future.

The Beverly and Qamanirjuaq herds are two of the largest barren-ground caribou herds in Canada, but their numbers have gone down over the last 30 years.

Management Plan Priorities

Watching the Caribou

Natural and human-caused factors such as climate change, diseases and parasites, disturbance, predators, and wildfires are some of the reasons the herds are declining.

The BQCMB will focus on watching the caribou herds and recommending actions to reduce threats to the caribou.

Respecting the Caribou

Hunting disrespectfully creates another threat for caribou, and disrespects Indigenous peoples, too. Education is key.

Indigenous-led plans, protocols and monitoring programs can help educate people about harvesting caribou respectfully.

Respecting the Land

The land provides everything the caribou need to survive. But development and wildfires are hurting the caribou’s habitat. Negative effects on caribou add up over time, but we need to learn more.

Community Connections

Lessons from the past are being lost. We need to strengthen connections between youth and Elders, and with caribou peoples across the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq ranges.

Our mission is to conserve the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq caribou herds for the Indigenous peoples who rely on them. But this Management Plan is also for others, including:

We all have a role to play, working together to safeguard the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq barren-ground caribou herds for current and future generations.
