Land Use Planning
A key role of the BQCMB is to respond to issues and provide comments on the concerns facing barren grounds caribou in northern Canada. These comments are on a range of issues including land use planning and land use activities such as harvesting. Comments on development issues are provided here.
Nunavut
Draft Nunavut Land Use Plan
When finalized, the new Nunavut Land Use Plan will replace the Keewatin Regional Land Use Plan (approved in 1995) and will apply to all of Nunavut. The new Plan has been under development by the Nunavut Planning Commission (NPC) since 2005, and the BQCMB has been providing written input to the formal process since 2010.
Approved and draft plans are available on NPC’s website.
Next steps:
- The deadline for written comments on the 2021 Draft NU Land Use Plan (DNLUP) was Oct. 8th, 2021. (Read a summary of the BQCMB’s recommendations.)
- Submissions are available from the NPC’s Public Registry.
- The Nunavut Planning Commission’s Kivalliq and Kitikmeot regional public hearings have been re-scheduled for September-November 2022.
