About the Caribou Connections Fund

The Caribou Connections Fund supports the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board’s (BQCMB) Caribou Management Plan by funding projects that connect youth with caribou, culture, and the land.

Previously called the “On-The-Land” fund, this Fund supports school-aged youth in Beverly and Qamanirjuaq caribou range communities to gain land-based skills, build caribou knowledge, take part in cultural activities and receive training and education as young harvesters.

The Caribou Connections Fund provides up to $10,000 annually, which may be awarded to one or more successful applicants.

Eligibility and FAQ

Who can apply

Community members, schools, youth groups, Indigenous governments, and local organizations in Beverly and Qamanirjuaq caribou range communities.

Eligible projects and activities

BQCMB accepts activities or projects that support school-aged youth to experience land-based skills, caribou knowledge and cultural activities.

This includes:

  • Youth and Elder Knowledge Exchange
  • On-the-Land Programs
    • Culture camps
    • Youth or Elder trips
    • Community caribou hunts
  • Traditional Skills Workshops
    • Hide tanning
    • Caribou hair tufting
    • Drum making
  • Education & Training
    • Hunter education
    • Respectful harvest workshops
    • School-based programs

What does BQCMB look for in an application?


Eligibility

Is the activity / project to take place in a Beverly and Qamanirjuaq caribou range community and / or involve members of these communities?

Caribou Connection

Does the activity / project strengthen the relationship between people and caribou?

Impact

Does the activity / project help youth gain land-based skills, caribou knowledge, cultural teachings from Elders and knowledge holders and / or harvester education?

Community Involvement

In what ways are youth, Elders, knowledge holders, harvesters, and families from the community involved in this project?

Cultural Relevance

Does the activity / project reflect, promote and strengthen cultural practices, language and/or traditions of the community?

Community Benefits

Does the activity / project benefit youth and the community?

Budget Justification

Does the budget reflect the needs of the activity / project?


Finances and reporting

How the Caribou Connections Fund is provided:

The BQCMB provides funds in two instalments:

  1. 75% of the approved amount will be provided prior to the anticipated start date.
  2. The remaining 25% will be provided when reporting requirements are fulfilled.

Reporting requirements:

  • Add your activity / project to the Caribou Connect map
  • Provide high resolution photos for use by the BQCMB.
  • Provide a brief written report describing activities and spending by March 31 of the same fiscal year.

If the funded activity / project does not go ahead:

If an awarded activity / project is not conducted, the Applicant must return the funding to the BQCMB or make alternate arrangements suitable to the Board.

The Caribou Connections Fund supports community-led initiatives that keep caribou knowledge and traditional practices alive for future generations.
